AUTHOR: Benjamin Franklin (1706–90)
QUOTATION: “Well, Doctor, what have we got—a Republic or a Monarchy?”
“A Republic, if you can keep it.”
ATTRIBUTION: The response is attributed to BENJAMIN FRANKLIN—at the close of the Constitutional Convention of 1787, when queried as he left Independence Hall on the final day of deliberation—in the notes of Dr. James McHenry, one of Maryland’s delegates to the Convention.
McHenry’s notes were first published in The American Historical Review, vol. 11, 1906, and the anecdote on p. 618 reads: “A lady asked Dr. Franklin Well Doctor what have we got a republic or a monarchy. A republic replied the Doctor if you can keep it.” When McHenry’s notes were included in The Records of the Federal Convention of 1787, ed. Max Farrand, vol. 3, appendix A, p. 85 (1911, reprinted 1934), a footnote stated that the date this anecdote was written is uncertain.
My goal with this blog experiment is to search out exactly what the founders of our nation had in mind when they created a government for, by, and of "WE, THE PEOPLE". From reading the founders own writings, you will find that they never wanted a Democracy, as it was the worst form of government.
Thomas Jefferson called it "Mobacracy" “A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine.”
and another favorite quote from Jefferson; "“Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms (of government) those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny”
What I fear now is that Our Country's 234 year old experiment in self-rule has been hijacked by those who want to lord over others with unbridled power. "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely."
So it is important for our children and grandchildren that we all come together who are of like mind and spirit to take America back and rebuild the ancient places.
